Nike has two new models to add to its popular Sasquatch line of drivers, both models carrying the Sumo name. One is just the Sumo, the other is the Sumo2 - That's "Sumo2" as in "Sumo squared," because the Nike Sasquatch Sumo2 driver features a square clubhead.

The Sumo2 marks the first square driver head from any major golf equipment manufacturer. But what's the point? Well, the point is moment of inertia - and lots of it. The higher the Moment of Inertia (MOI) of a club, the more forgiving that club should be on mis-hits. That means that if you hit the ball on the toe of a higher-MOI driver, for example, the driver will twist less at impact and the ball will wind up closer to the intended target than it would have with a similar strike off a lower-MOI club.

How does a square clubhead help with MOI? Nike's Sasquatch drivers already featured the SQ PowerBow and SQ Max Back Center of Gravity technologies, and those are incorporated in the Sumo drivers, as well. Both already addressed MOI, but are enhanced in the new design.

The Sumo2 has multi-material construction (beta-titanium face, titanium body, composite crown) that saves precious grams of weight, weight that can then be redistributed rearward to, among other things, up the MOI. This is standard practice in the industry now. But Nike is redistributing that saved weight into the square geometry of the Sumo2. Think of it as adding some extra padding around the curved rear of a "regular" clubhead, padding that squares off the geometry. Also, the square geometry keeps the club legal.

The "regular" Sumo driver has a traditional appearance, although Nike says that it has the highest MOI of any all-titanium driver. The Sasquatch Sumo2 driver has an even higher MOI, which Nike says is the highest in golf.

Both the Sumo and Sumo2 have the yellow soleplate of Sasquatch drivers. Both are 460cc in clubhead volume, both feature SasQuatch/Diamana shafts, and each is available in lofts of 8.5, 9.5, 10.5 and 13 degrees.
